Rogue One Trailer:

Yesterday we got a glimpse of what the next instalment in the Star Wars universe will bring, in the form of Rogue One, the first of the extended Star Wars universe anthology films where the battle between Jedi and Sith will take a backseat.

Rogue One will focus on the team that obtained the Death Star plans prior to the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. This trailer focuses on Felicity Jones’ (Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything) character Jyn Erso, a rebel with a surprisingly long list of convictions that make her a perfect candidate to join the squad going after the Empire.

The feature was written by Chris Weitz (About a Boy and The Golden Compass) and John Knoll (A New Hope and Return of the Jedi) with the latter having serious Star Wars pedigree that makes me hopeful that the screenplay for this film will be fantastic. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards who was behind the 2014 reboot of Godzilla which is the only thing about the cast and crew of Rogue One that makes me a little nervous.

Actors included in this film aside from the aforementioned Felicity Jones include Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal TV series), Alan Tudyk (A Knight’s Tale) and Genevieve O’Reilly who is reprising her role from Star Wars Episode III where she played the young Mon Mothma, one of the main leaders of the Rebellion. All solid acting talent with many more to be announced.

The prospect of filling in the as of yet unexplored regions between Episodes III and IV is exciting and the spine tingling adaptation of the Star Wars musical score in the trailer gave it the punch it didn’t lack. It was somber but that fit perfectly, remember “many brave men and women died to bring you this information” so I wouldn’t expect this to be a feel good film. The action certainly isn’t lacking, the stakes are high and we saw a beach scramble with AT-ATs…

What do you think of the Rogue One trailer? Are you excited to see a lightsaber-less Star Wars (although we did catch a glimpse of Darth Vader) that is focused on the foot soldier’s life during the days of civil war? Let us know @celebritycutout.
