After a week of good news for Trekkies, hearing that Sir Patrick Stewart is returning to his role of Jean-Luc Picard in a brand new series based around the character, not so good news was bound to follow, to balance out the ying and yang of the universe. Both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth were in talks to reprise their roles as James and George Kirk in the so far untitled Star Trek 4, however after a lot of back and forth with both Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media, talks have broken down and, for the moment, fallen through.
The reason? It is down to the poor performance of Star Trek Beyond, the latest film in the new Star Trek cinematic series that followed Star Trek Into Darkness, the film in which Benedict Cumberbatch played a re-imagining of Kahn. Star Trek Beyond did not go as well as the studio had projected and because of that they were looking to re-negotiate the contracts of both actors, asking them to take a pay cut going forward into the next film. After these talks, contracts would have been discussed with the other principle cast members, including Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Karl Urban but now these have all been stalled too by this news.
Both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth want the studio to honour the original contract arrangement which seems to be a sticking point with the studio with the parties not able to find common ground. This by no means is the end of the matter as sources indicate the film is still a priority for the studio and it is not being put on hold. Whether this just means a slight delay as better compensation is discussed that will appease both sides or whether a new direction for the film with a new story and new actors is yet to be seen.
What do you think will be the result of this? Did you enjoy Star Trek Beyond and if the studio decides to go on with a new actor as the Captain of the Enterprise, which Captain would you like to see and who would you want to play them? Comment below or tweet us @celebritycutout.
